Cuil’s “Safe Search”: not so safe

Have you heard of Cuil? It’s a new search engine developed by some former Google employees. They claim to index three times more web pages than any other search engine.

My experience with it so far has been less than positive. One of the features of their search engine is to display images next to their search results. When I do a search on my own name, one of the images is of a gentleman who has just finished, uh, manually pleasuring himself. And this is with “Safe Search” turned on. See for yourself. (NSFW) This image has since been removed.

According to an article in The Register, I’m not the only one whose search results have been given the pornographic treatment. A VP at Cuil is blaming “heavy traffic” for the problem. All the same, I think I’ll stick with Google for now.

  • hello,

Yes, it’s true that Cuil “safe search” is not so safe… Last time, i went to Cuil for searching information about rogue software.. i put on search box: “av2010.net – is it safe?”. later on i press search.. and then, POOF! My AVG 8.0 says “Threat Detected – exploit: Rogue software downloader site” … Phew, that was close! Then, i close the Cuil tab quickly…. and now…. I’ll stick to Google. :D

  • Hey Shaz, just for the record, I don’t think the Cuil site is a source of malware. I think AVG was probably warning you about a link to the av2010 site in the search results.
