I want a photograph of this
the black leaves against a charcoal sky
I am vulnerable here
my flashlight offers some small protection
my words are no protection at all
no safety
I am winked at by the horizon at 12 second intervals
I confront the sea
I want a photograph of this
But I know the picture wouldn’t take

You may be tempted to follow the link above.
Don’t.
Seriously, don’t visit this link. Just don’t. You’ll spend like two hours trying to figure out this silly game. It’s not worth it.
I’m sick with a cold. That’s not fun.
I went to High Tea at the Empress with my auntie and my sister yesterday. That was fun.
I’m making a breakfast hash for breakfast, er, lunch. Ran outta hashbrowns though, so I’m using chopped-up french fries. We’ll see how that works.
Kettle’s boiling, gotta go!

Today I found out about the Coachella Festival. It’s this massive art and music festival held in Indio, California, which is near Palm Springs, apparently. The official lineup hasn’t been announced but Pitchfork has an unofficial list of groups slated to play. Three of my favorite bands (Radiohead, Wilco, and The Flaming Lips) are playing, along with …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, My Morning Jacket, Broken Social Scene, !!!, Dizzee Rascal, LCD Soundsystem, the Sleepy Jackson, Prefuse 73, (International) Noise Conspiracy, Air, The Pixies, Kraftwerk, The Cure, Stereolab, PJ Harvey, Bright Eyes, Death Cab for Cutie, The Black Keys, Sage Francis, Basement Jaxx, Sparta, Electric 6, Thursday, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
I spent about an hour checking prices on airline tickets and figuring out how long it would take to drive (Yahoo! figures about 20 hours and 40 minutes). It’s mighty tempting, I must say. Road trip, anyone?
PS: The songs we recorded on January 25 have been posted on jaydunphy.com. Go check ’em out.
Check it, yo: my homies Jay Dunphy and K.C. Hingley are playin’ the Spiral Café on January 31. I’ll be singin’ backup vocals on a few songs with Jay. Cover is by donation, show starts at 8pm. The Spiral Café is at 418 Craigflower Rd. Here’s a map. Come check it out, and then wander down to the Cambie with us to check out the Ghost of Science show.
Tried to update the kernel on my box to 2.6 and it won’t boot. First it borked LILO, and I managed to fix that. Now I’m getting a “cannot find root device” error. So, you guys are stuck with the old kernel until I get it straightened around. Sorry. I was hoping a new and streamlined kernel would fix some of the slowness problems.
In the meantime, look at me bowling!
I’d hit it, indeed.
Today was recording day! Jay, Matt, Josh and I went into the studio at 10 a.m. today and came out having recorded three songs.
Our band is called Jay Dunphy and the Religion. (For those who may not know, Jay, Matt and I used to play in a band called The Moonshine Revellers. Now go buy our album.) We recorded this demo with Gilles Maillet, frontman for Ghost of Science, who also recorded the album we did with The Moonshine Revellers. The session went really well. It seemed to be a lot less stressful than the last time we recorded, probably a combination of greater experience and lowered expectations. Naturally I brought along my camera and took a few pictures. Hopefully Gilles will have it mixed within the next few days. I don’t know what will happen with it then, we’ll probably just hand copies out to bars. Maybe we’ll put a few tracks up on the website too.
Speaking of music, here’s your link for the week.
No, you can’t pick it up on FM. It’s a webzine published by the CBC. Its subject is “Music and Modern Media”, and it features everything from photography to poetry to underground bands, all backed up with a soundtrack from its sister site, www.newmusiccanada.com. The current issue features articles about Aesop Rock and Po’ Girl, how to leave your lover in 12 easy sofas, plus a series of still images shot on video (I can’t explain it, you’ll just have to go see them.) The site was recognized last year with a couple Webby Awards.
